What is a Sales Funnel and How Can it Drive Your Business?

Marketers often wish there was a one-stop-shop for gaining new customers online. We wish there was, because it would make our work at Dion Marketing a lot easier. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of work to spread the word about your business or product. In order to gain the attention of potential customers and convert them into paying customers, there’s a certain path those customers must take. The sales funnel shows marketers how to lead customers down that path.

A sales funnel details the different steps a lead takes to convert into a paying customer. The funnel shape illustrates the idea that 100 leads might start down the path but only 10 will come out of the end.

Awareness: The first step in the sales funnel is getting the awareness of potential customers. This can be done through a paid ad, social media post or organically. Determining if a lead is warm or cold can develop your message. A warm lead is someone who has heard of your business and brand, where as a cold lead is someone who has never heard of the business or product your promoting. When advertising a cold lead, you message needs to be a lot more detailed and specific. An example of the awareness step is a cold lead seeing a paid Facebook ad promoting your business.

Interest: The second step is to gain the interest of these leads with a special offer, giveaway or another exclusive offer. This step is important because potential clients need to be inspired to share their contact information.

Decision: The third step is when a customer makes the decision to use your business over your competitors. The decision may be made based on price, reviews or accessibility. Make sure there is a call to action on your website that makes it easy for customers to purchase, sign up, or create an account. Making a customer’s decision easy is important in this step.

Action: The last step is the most important, because it’s the customer’s time to take action and support your business. This can be making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, making a donation or doing whatever your call-to-action suggested in the decision phase. Getting the customer to take action at the end of the sales funnel is the final step in the sales funnel process.

Getting new customers and maintaining those customers is the main goal of a marketing team. By utilizing the sales funnel, you can modify and refine your sales funnel path over time.
